Did you ever find yourself doing a job you’re not passionate about, but you have to do for a living? If your answer is ‘Yes’, then this post is for you. In June 2011, I recruited a very talented young man to be the Management Team Coordinator. His role was to help the management team plays its functions effectively. I will call him Ali.

After six months into the role, I could see Ali lacked motivation. During the mid-term review, I had a candid and direct conversation with him. Here is the short version:

  • Me: Ali, I can see you don’t like your job.

  • Ali: I do. I really love this job.

  • Me: look at me, Ali, I’m not judging you. I’m just trying to help you. So, let’s me formulate this differently. What are you passionate about?

  • Ali: I had always wanted to be a fundraiser. My dream job is to be the Head Resources Mobilization and Partnerships for a global organization.

  • Me: Wow! That sounds great, Ali. Do you realize your current role is a hard path to get there?

  • Ali: Yes, I do.

  • Me: Okay, here is the deal: let’s work together to support you to realize your dream.

Read Episode 2/2 to learn the rest of Ali’s story.

Moral: Open your mind and heart to those who want to help you.
